Pair of large panels composed of five basswood boards carved - Lot 96
Pair of large panels composed of five basswood boards carved in bas-relief, one depicting the Nativity with the Annunciation to the Shepherds, the other the Adoration of the Magi. Germany, Franconia, circa 1500 H. 126.5 cm - L. 103.5 cm (minor accidents) Provenance: Sale Tajan - Paris, May 17, 2000 lot 27 Collection of Monsieur X, Franche-Comté. These panels were probably applied to shutters on either side of a large altarpiece. In Franconia, and more widely in Bavaria, the cult of the Infant Jesus in the crib was supported by the revelations that St. Brigid received from a vision of the Nativity. Brigitte saw the Virgin kneeling on the ground, hands clasped before the naked Child in a basket, and St. Joseph dressed in pilgrim's garb holding a lantern to illuminate the scene. This vision was the inspiration for numerous representations throughout the German Empire. Around 1470, the engraver Martin Schongauer produced a version (fig.) that undoubtedly inspired the composition of Nativity scenes in Germany.
