Sybil in green patina bronze, hollow cast. - Lot 35
Sybil in green patina bronze, hollow cast. Standing, the prophetess wears a belted gown and a mantle, one side of which returns to the front, forming soft vertical folds; the edges of the mantle are decorated with geometric motifs. Hair is held in a bun at the back of the head, with wavy strands falling to the shoulders. A flower-shaped tiara magnifies the forehead, releasing heavy locks of hair highlighted by deep striations. Northern Italy, Padua, late 15th century H. 21 cm (wear and tear, some missing parts visible) This finely chased statuette probably comes from an important decorative ensemble. In Northern Italy, candelabras were used to hold the Paschal candle. These candelabras are sometimes of impressive size, and are packed with small allegorical figures leaning against each other. The concave trace on the back of our sybil indicates that it was leaning against a rounded shaft.
