Ivory plaque carved in high relief with a Crucifixion Crucifixion under arcatures; beautiful orange patina. Christ on the cross, his hands nailed in a frontal position, holds his head down, his legs very bent, showing the collapse of the suspended dead body. The Virgin appears to be collapsing; the hands of the woman supporting her are visible on her bust. A triple arcature with pinnacles adorned with flowery hooks occupies the upper part of the plaque. Mosan or Rhenish art, circa 1360-1380 H. 10 cm - W. 7.2 cm - D. 85.36 gr Inscriptions in ink on the back (wear and minor restorations) Provenance: Former Louis-Pierre Bresset collection, Château de la Rochelambert, Haute-Loire. A plate with an extremely similar design is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London Museum in London (inv. Circ.495-1923). Particularly noteworthy is the position of the Virgin Mary fainting and turning her head inwards (fig.). Works consulted: P. Williamson and G. Davies, Medieval Ivory Carving, 1200-1550, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 2014, Part I, Cat 128, p 369.
