Crowned man's head in carved limestone; crown with gems cut - Lot 19
Crowned man's head in carved limestone; crown with gems cut in rectangles and lozenges, set on a wide band; oval face, hemmed eyelids, half-open mouth and bifid beard with wavy locks. Ile de France, third quarter of the 12th century Height: 28 cm (erosion) Plinth Provenance: Former Louis-Pierre Bresset collection Bresset collection, Château de la Rochelambert, Haute-Loire. Despite the erosion of the face, it is possible to compare this head with another of a crowned man from the archivolt of the Valois portal of the Abbey of Saint-Denis, in the Louvre (inv. RF 553) (fig.). This may place the imagier in the Dionysian entourage.
