Johannes Maria MONSORNO (1768-1836) - Lot 316
Johannes Maria MONSORNO (1768-1836) Folk festival on the occasion of the imperial visit to the fortification works in Linz: the arrival of the cabriolet of Emperor Franz and Empress Caroline at the tower no. 12 Watercolor and gouache on paper 293 x 411 mm. Titled, in ink, in a cartouche, on the mount: Die ankuft II KK MM zu dem volksfeste auf dem Thurme n12 im Jahre Folk festival on the occasion of the imperial visit to the fortification works in Linz At the instigation of Archduke Maximilian Joseph of Habsburg-Este (1782-1863), Major-General of the Austrian army and younger brother of Duke Francis of Modena (see previous lots), the Modena (see previous lots), a great campaign of fortifications was started in the 1830s, in order to raise the territory with towers of a new kind, nicknamed "Maximilian Towers". An imposing belt of 32 towers was thus built around Linz, a defensive lock controlling the access to Vienna. The tower under construction at the time in the gouaches shown here was No. 12, nicknamed "Agnes", of which some remains still exist. The archives of Linz preserve the memory of this imperial visit on July 21, 1832.
