Chased and gilded bronze writing case stylizing a vase in the antique style. The lid formed by a bell discovers a candlestick, the silvered metal basin. The lateral holds with lions' heads forming respectively an inkwell and an hourglass. The square base is decorated with a drawer. Work attributed to Matthew Boulton (1728-1809). England around 1780. Size : 21.5 cm Matthew Boulton was born in 1728 in Birmingham, he is a famous British industrialist associated with the engineer James Watt. Son of a manufacturer of small metal objects specialized in the brooches, the young Boulton will make his classes near his father. His journey through England will make his work known to Prince George, the future George III. Matthew Boulton wrote in 1771 "I am very anxious to become a great silversmith". As a member of the Lunar Society, he developed many concepts that were at the origin of the Industrial Revolution Industrial Revolution such as the creation of the Boulton & Watt steam engines.
