Sleeping soldier in sculpted limestone, part of an altarpiec - Lot 87
Sleeping soldier in sculpted limestone, part of an altarpiece for a scene of the Resurrection. Champagne, first quarter of the 16th century H. 43 cm Plinth (small lacks) It is striking to note how realistically the sculptor shows the weariness and deep sleep of this soldier, lost in images that occupy his mind. This very subjective, almost intimate expression is characteristic of the Champagne school of the early 16th century. The dramatic psychology of the characters is exposed without façade, the intimate without modesty but with subtlety and delicacy. This soldier guards the body of a condemned man, who died violently after physical torture. The images are present in his mind and this appears in this sculpture. A tombstone by the master of Chaumont is preserved in the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in the same city; comparisons can be made with our soldier. In particular with the portrait of Geoffroy de Saint-Blin (fig), the husband of the donor, Marguerite de Baudricourt. The bifid beard with its smooth and supple, almost silky locks, but also the hollowed cheeks, the marked eyebrows, the fine, pointed nose with a curved dorsal line are elements that allow us to situate our sculpture in the environment of this production of the south of Champagne at the very beginning of the 16th century.
