D. of a large plate: 24 cm. Notes: This set was inspired by a service produced for U.S. President Rutherford, based on Theodore Davis' watercolors of American flora and fauna. Theodore Davis also created new forms in collaboration with the Haviland factory and their advanced techniques, especially for the decorations with chromolithography. Davis' choice to represent these different animals with particular plants in their natural habitat from all regions of America, symbolized the recent unification of the American nation, for a service that was to be used at the presidential table. A set of original pieces is in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art (Inv. BMA 1999.133-136, and 138-141, and BMA.1998.22). According to Mr. Laurens d'Albis, a descendant of the Haviland family who has written numerous publications on the production of this factory, the cost price of this American service was so high that some time later the remaining chromolithographs were used on other forms with different borders.
