MARIA PAVLOVNA, grande-duchesse de Russie (1854-1920). - Lot 312
MARIA PAVLOVNA, grande-duchesse de Russie (1854-1920). Autograph letter signed "Marie" addressed to her niece the Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of Russia (1875-1960), Paris, May 14, 1912, 4 pages, in-8°, text in English on headed paper with the Grand Duchess's cipher, edged in black. Folds, as is. Translation: "You must already know from the charming Madame de Stockel what I'm about to tell you, for yesterday I spoke to her about it. The young Duc de Montpensier, my nephew, has heard of your pretty daughter and is very anxious to make her acquaintance. He came to see me to talk about it, and asked me to find out if the idea would be well received by you and Sandro. He's a nice-looking young man, 28 years old, in excellent health, intelligent and wealthy, just the sort of husband one would want for one's daughter, according to my ideas. He's going to Stockholm in June and could come and stay with me in (...) and from there make visits "along the coast". Now please think it over and give me an answer as long as I'm here until the last days of our May, as I'm not going to Moscow not feeling really able to bear all this "fatigue". Naturally his visit to my house does not commit me to anything at the moment, only an introduction, if you want to wait for Irina, but he is certainly "a good match" and there are not that many now, and also living in France is charming, you also like that and in my opinion that should not be put aside. Merci vraiment beaucoup pour vos roses et votre cher souvenir de mon vieil anniversaire. I am saddened by all the deaths in your Danish family! Poor mother! I think of her a lot. (...) With a tender kiss. Your loving aunt." Provenance: this letter was kept by Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna (1875-1960), then inherited by her daughter Princess Irina Alexandrovna Youssoupoff (1895-1970), and has remained in the latter's family to this day.
