LÉOPOLD III, roi de Belgique (1901-1983). - Lot 253
LÉOPOLD III, roi de Belgique (1901-1983). Autograph letter signed "Leopold", addressed to Prince Axel of Denmark (1888-1934), dated June 17, 1926, on monogrammed paper, in-4°, 3 pages, text in English, preserved with envelope. Tears, traces of moisture, as is. Enclosed is a photographic portrait of King Leopold III by Robert Marchand, official photographer to the Belgian court. Interesting historical letter from the first meeting between Prince Leopold and his future wife Princess Astrid of Sweden. Astrid of Sweden. Translation: My dear Axel, I have received your interesting letter. Your words will not be forgotten. Thank you very much for your good advice. First of all, I'd like to answer your question. I felt the same way as when we parted, during those few weeks. After her visit and after you left, I was really surprised, I must say, that she [Princess Astrid of Sweden] was more shy than when we were in Rochefort, after taking you back to the train station. She seemed cheerful, and we walked back along a slightly longer route than we had taken at the picnic. It was a delightful moment. Over the next few days, we went to (illegible). We were both in the car. The others, including my father [King Albert of Belgium], were in another car. It's by far the best way to talk together. We talked a lot. At first, it was all about me and my trivial matters. Later, the conversations became more interesting. Talking to each other about what we've done and the things we like and don't like. (illegible), events continued to unfold in this way. Inside, and specifically during dinner, it was impossible to talk. She had a long conversation with my mother [Queen Elisabeth of Belgium], which gave me great pleasure. She seems to have great confidence in herself. Wednesday 26th, they left. We still (illegible), in Liège at night by the 9:45 train. Things went even better from then on. As we were parting on the train, she told me, very kindly, that we should see each other again. Those words made me very happy and gave me hope. Her parents [Prince and Princess Charles of Sweden] very kindly invited me to come to their country house in July for Fridhem [Peace Villa, built in 1909 as a summer residence for Prince Charles of Sweden and his wife, née Princess Ingeborg of Denmark]. I should arrive there on July 4. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to it. Obviously, I'll have to be very patient and not rush things. Can I expect to meet you somewhere? Where will you have already left for Brazil? Please send me a card to let me know (...) "
