ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE DU XIXe SIÈCLE. D'APRÈS DANIEL SAINT (1778-1847). Portrait of Empress Josephine (1763-1814). Beautiful oval miniature, painted on ivory, depicting the young empress, posing slightly in three-quarter view, adorned with a court dress, a magnificent diadem, a necklace and pearl earrings, preserved under curved glass in a gold-ringed frame. On the reverse, a mother-of-pearl plate bears the engraved inscription: "Don de l'impce (l'impératrice) Joséphine 1808 à Alex (Alexandre) Lenoir". Slight wear. Sight: H.: 5 cm - L.: 3.8 cm. Reference: several miniatures exist of the empress posing in the same outfit, one of which is signed by Daniel Saint and is in the collections of the Musée national de Malmaison et Bois-Préau (ref. : M.M.40.47.6103). History: Alexandre Lenoir (1761-1839) is best known for having created and administered the Musée des Monuments français.
