HUGO, Victor & Adèle. - Lot 42
HUGO, Victor & Adèle. Set of 2 documents: - HUGO, Victor (1802-1885). L.A.S., S.l., June 26 n.d. 1 p. in-8°. "We met one day at the home of Paul Foucher [his brother-in-law]. That meeting left a precious trace in my memory; would you like to repeat it, Monsieur? Would you like to have dinner with me on Thursday July 8th? You've just written an eloquent page on the book Actes et Paroles, which deeply moved and charmed me. I'd be delighted to shake your hand. Ex imo corde. Victor Hugo [...]". - HUGO, Adèle née Foucher (1803-1868). L.A.S. addressed to Carlin fils, Saint-Leu-Taverny. [Paris], April 29, 1843. 3 pp. in-12. Address on verso of second leaf with postmarks. Aware of her correspondent's kindness to Victor Hugo's sons, she asks if he would be willing to host Charles Hugo for a few days, to make up for his Parisian solitude. These two letters are tabbed and included in Hugo's book Vers choisis, Saint-Prix Montmorency, [Charles Gadala], December 27, 1885. In-8° square, full vellum à la Bradel, smooth spine adorned with rubricated title and hand-painted ornaments, IG initials painted on first board, gilt head, untrimmed. A very fresh copy on laid paper printed for Mademoiselle Isaïe Gadala, with a signed autograph letter from her father: " Later, soon! You will be happy, my beloved daughter, to find this book, which will bring you great joy; it will remain a memento of your beloved father. Ch. Gadala". Flowers and dried leaves interspersed between the leaves with discharges. This luxurious edition is the work of Charles Gadala, a stockbroker whose marriage was sponsored by James de Rothschild. A collector, among other things, of Impressionist paintings, he published this anthology of Hugo's works for his close friends and family; the print run was confidential.
