Rare 16th century Venetian illumination. - Lot 37
Rare 16th century Venetian illumination. Frontispiece of a Committimus painted with gouache on parchment, cut out of oval format, representing the Virgin and Child blessing flanked by two characters: Alvise Mocenigo (1507-1577), doge of Venice from 1570 to 1577, as well as one of his two nephews, sons of his brother Giovanni, Tommaso or Alvise. Venice, 1570-1580. In a later oval giltwood frame. H. 16 x W. 13.5 cm (at sight). H. 23 x W. 20 cm (frame). The kneeling figure of Doge Alvise Mocenigo is identifiable from his official portraits, notably Tintoretto's large painting of him kneeling with his family at the feet of the Virgin and Child, ca. 1575, in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Alvise was the fourth member of the Mocenigo family to become doge (the elected head of state) of Venice. Jacopo Tintoretto and his workshop painted several other works commissioned by the Mocenigo family. The image is a variation of the official votive paintings that decorated the Palazzo Ducale and other government buildings in Venice. They are part of a long tradition of Venetian paintings that show patrons venerating the Virgin and Child or being presented to them by a patron saint
