École française d'époque Empire. Oval miniature portrait of Madame Botta, probably the mother of Vincenzo Botta (1818-1894) and mother-in-law of Anne Charlotte Botta (1815-1891), a leading figure in the artistic and literary life of New York in the mid-nineteenth century. She is depicted seated in a white dress and red scarf. Vertical crack. In an oval blackened wood frame, bearing on the back a label annotated in ink "M(adam)e Botta, godmother of Mother, sister-in-law of great-grandmother Botta". H. 7 x W. 5.7 cm (when viewed). H. 13.5 x W. 12 cm (frame).
