Maurice Sauvayre began his career during the First World War, making a name for himself with satirical drawings on the theme of the poilu. He then contributed to many periodicals and in the 1930s was part of the association called the Modern Group, exhibiting in Paris at the Georges Petit Gallery (12, rue Godot-de-Mauroy) and the Dru Gallery (11, rue Montaigne).
