Virgin or holy woman in carved fruitwood, back hollowed out - Lot 82
Virgin or holy woman in carved fruitwood, back hollowed out and filled in. Standing, slightly swaying, hands open, a long hair with wavy strands falls on her back. She is wearing a shirt with a beaded neckline, a dress with a V-neckline closed by an oval and beaded pectoral brooch and a coat with a flap coming back to the front forming architectural and broken folds. Southern Germany, Ulm, follower of Daniel Mauch, circa 1540 H. 52.5 cm (small missing fingers) This saintly woman is dazzlingly beautiful with her pure features and rich clothing. The perfectly structured hairstyle, with long locks falling down the back and finely sculpted with deep lines, the delicacy of the facial features, the penetrating gaze emphasized by the arching eyebrows extending the nose, make us think of the legacy left by the master Daniel Mauch. The dress follows the fashion of the 1530s, when Daniel Mauch left his workshop to move to Liege. But we find under the chisel of this follower the same softness and the same precision. The personality of this sculptor is emancipated in the more broken and angular draperies which are different from those of the master.
