Virgin and Child in carved and polychromed wood. Seated on a - Lot 37
Virgin and Child in carved and polychromed wood. Seated on a bench, Mary presents her Child seated on her knees, holding him on her sides with her long-fingered hands; the face is oval, with a protruding nose, the mouth is tightly closed, the chin tucked in; she is wearing a veil held back by a headband forming a crown, the veil frames the face and mingles with the cloak open in front of the chest, revealing the dress with a round neckline, a part of the cloak returns to the knees, vertical folds of the dress revealing the shoes. The Child is also wearing a crown as a headband, he raises his right hand as a sign of blessing and holds a closed book on his left knee, his cloak is crossed in front, soft folds of his tunic are caught between his legs forming deep waves.

This throne of majesty, faithful to the representations of the Auvergne, can be compared to the Virgin kept in the church of Saint-Martin d'Hix (Pyrénées Orientales). Indeed, the crowns placed on very oval faces, and even more so the mantle of Christ who is not dressed only in a tunic as usual, but in a cloak whose flaps crisscross or are simply left open, the folds of the bottom of the garments forming waves superimposed horizontally and giving an effect of depth, are stylistic elements that we find with the Virgin presented here.
