Fragmentary relief representing a scene with a dignitary in - Lot 26
Fragmentary relief representing a scene with a dignitary in armor standing in front of a seated figure wearing an elephant's head personifying defeated Africa. The seated figure in a depressed attitude is the same as on the relief called "La Dace Cesi" kept in Rome. This headdress is also found on some representations of the emperor Alexander the Great as well as on Roman coins. Comparative bibliography: Joaneath Spicer, The personification of Africa with an Elephant-head Crest in Cesare Ripa Iconologia (1603) in "Personification", ed. W. Melion and Ramakers (Leiden 2016). White marble. Gaps and wear. Traces of modern sawing and fixings. Provenance: Former Hyde Collection. Collection of Doctor Vettier The relief, coming from an American collection, was later sealed in the wall of a property in the Perche region. Later, it was cut on the back to decorate a new property. This last project was abandoned because of bad weather conditions that would have been detrimental to a new outdoor exhibition of this relief. The marble maker's invoice is available. Roman art, around the 1st century. 59 x 65 cm. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of cultural property issued by the direction of the museums of France.
