CHINE, XIXe siècle pour le marché colonial Portuguese Small baluster jar in porcelain with blue and white decoration including the Christian initials "JHS". Appearing in the European medieval period, these initials are the acronym of Jesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus, savior of humanity) Restoration to the collar These initials are surmounted by a cross and present three nails in the lower part recalling the sacred nails that were used to crucify Jesus Christ. The whole is inscribed in a sun. This symbolism, which became the emblem of the Jesuits, was introduced in 1541 by Ignatius of Loyola, one of the founders of the order. This type of jars including European subjects and other Catholic symbolism were produced in China on commission of the Jesuit missionary fathers in order to satisfy a demand in Europe between the 17th and 19th century.
