Jean Cardot was a French sculptor born on July 20, 1930 in Saint-Étienne (Loire) and died on October 13, 2020 in Paris. He was elected member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France on November 9, 1983, in Paul Belmondo's chair. He was President of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1992 and 1997. Large-scale public commissions became an essential part of his work. Part of his work focused on monumental effigies of great personalities of the 19th and 20th centuries: Statue de Thomas Jefferson (2006, Paris, passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor); La Grande-Duchesse Charlotte de Luxembourg (1989-1990, Luxembourg); Pierre de Coubertin (1993, Paris, headquarters of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee); Winston Churchill (1998, Paris, in front of the Petit Palais, Seine side); Monument au général de Gaulle (2000, Paris, place Clemenceau); Jacques Chaban Delmas (2012, Bordeaux, place Pey-Berland). These bronze works were cast by the Fondation de Coubertin foundry in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse.
