2 vols. large folio, 33,5 x 50cm, [7] ff, [101] pl. & [3] ff, [120] pl, English binding of the end of the 19th century, signed Hayday & C°, in red morocco, fillets and lace framing and central decoration gilt fleurdelisé on the boards, spine ribbed decorated with fleur-de-lys and gilt lace, double gilt fillet at the edges, inner gilt fillets and roulettes, gilt edges.
"First edition of this precious collection" (Cohen) of 351 etched subjects after Watteau, on 221 plates, by the young François Boucher, Jean Audran, the Count of Caylus, Cochin père, Desplaces, Nicolas Silvestre, Vanloo, etc.
Self-portrait of Watteau engraved by Boucher at the head of the first volume and tribute to the painter by Boucher at the head of the second. The work is entirely engraved, including the titles and the introductory text leaves.
A very fine copy, very fresh and wide-margined, perfectly established by the great London workshop Hayday. From the libraries of Edward Atkyns of Ketteringham (1718-1765), father-in-law of Lady Charlotte Atkyns, actress and friend of Queen Marie-Antoinette, whom she tried to save (engraved heraldic bookplate and handwritten name in brown ink dated 1736 on the verso of the titles), Stephen Papentz Demming (?name handwritten in brown ink dated 1817 on verso of titles) and William, 9th Baron Byron (1855-1917; engraved heraldic ex-libris). Corners very slightly rubbed.
