Paris, Furne, J.-J.Dubochet et cie, J.Hetzel et Paulin, then Alexandre Houssiaux, 1842-1855. 20 vol. in-8, 13 x 21,5cm, bound in red half-chagrin, spine with gilt designs. First collective edition of La comédie humaine, containing several works in first editions. Illustrated with 145 plates (out of 153) engraved on wood after T. Johannot, H.Daumier, P.Gavarni, H.Monnier, etc. A good copy. The last four volumes in different bindings. 8 plates are missing: the 7 added by Houssiaux in 1855 (the portrait of Balzac and the 6 plates of volumeXIII) and one plate of volumeXX. Scattered foxing in the last volumes. Covers not preserved. Vicar I, 239-247.
