Altar front with double-headed eagle, spindles, Northern Italy, 19th century. Spindle lace with patches, the motifs in various stitches and connected by a network of hexagonal mesh braided, and consists of five panels connected by a seam type "stitch of raccroc". Superb composition of two alternating motifs, a double-headed eagle topped by a large sun under a closed crown within a flight of large exotic flowers and butterflies on either side, and a vase from which spring soft leafy stems ending with exotic flowers, butterflies above and birds perched on either side. Cream colored cotton. This lace is a beautiful example of lace made in the nineteenth century and resuming the ornamental register of lace from the mid-seventeenth century. Dim. each of the panels : H 74 cm, W 54 cm, that is to say 2,70 m x 54 cm in total (good condition)
