Rare large ruffle with the figure of Charles X, needle and s - Lot 245
Rare large ruffle with the figure of Charles X, needle and spindles, Brussels, circa 1824-1830. In mixed lace, some of the motifs made with spindles, others in very fine needlepoint, and applied on a straight spindle network, in light ivory color. Dim. 1,60 m x 68 cm (good general condition, small accidents and fine resumptions to the network) The laces decorated with royal numbers are rare, most of them being preserved in the collections of French or foreign museums. French lace from this period is all the more rare as lace production was strongly impacted by the complex political situation of the years following the French Revolution. This large ruffle from a stocking is remarkable for the perfect rendering of the cipher of his majesty Charles X adopted by the house of the king, the flowers of Lilies to the needle as well as the religious motifs of vine shoots to bunches of grapes, ears of wheat and sheaves of lilies au naturel. It is most likely a stocking dawn made on the occasion of a royal ceremony such as the coronation of Charles X.
