Rare large bottom of dawn in needle lace, Sedan, circa 1730- - Lot 185
Rare large bottom of dawn in needle lace, Sedan, circa 1730-40. Circular stocking with no visible seam, with remarkable needlework of extreme finesse, the motifs with very tight embroidery in festoon stitch and connected by the network of large stitches finely picoté of the Point de France and the Point de Sedan. The decoration is well structured by large cartouches with domes reminiscent of draperies, followed by smaller cartouches decorated with various stitches of great finesse of execution, housing bouquets of peonies, bulbous flowers including tulips, flowers very popular at this time, and flexible branches of foliage and flowers, bouquets well supported by beautiful floral motifs, exotic flowers and large floral motifs in the border. Linen color dark ivory. Dim. 3,40 m x 66 cm (good condition, rare very small spots) This stocking is certainly the work of a great workshop, possible heir of a former royal factory established by Louis XIV and Colbert in 1665. Provenance : sale of February 3, 1988 at Drouot, study Gros and Delletrez.
