RACINE, Jean - Lot 57
RACINE, Jean Œuvres [...] P., Denys Thierry 1702. 2 vols in-12, full red morocco, triple fillet on the boards, spines decorated with the arms of La Feuillade and Chamillart, ornamented bands, interior roulette, gilt edges. [12], 468 pp. + (12), 516 pp. The title page of the second volume is missing, which slightly alters the text on the reverse. Bound with the arms of the Duke of La Feuillade and Marie-Thérèse Chamillart. Louis d'Aubusson, duc de La Feuillade was despised and even hated by Saint-Simon. It is to his marriage in 1701 with Marie-Thérèse Chamillart (1689-1739), daughter of Michel Chamillart, Secretary of State for War, that he owes his return to grace. This explains the binding with the arms of the wife and husband. 12 intaglio plates drawn and engraved by François Chauveau, of a very good edition. Counterfeit at the same date as that of the Compagnie des Libraires whose edition had been supervised by Boileau.
