LAMBERT, Jean-François de (1716-1803) Attribué à
The Seasons, Poem. Fifth edition, revised and corrected. Followed by L'Abenaki, Sara, Ziméo, [etc...]
Amsterdam, 1773.
In-12, full white calf with orientalist decoration entirely mosaicked by the workshop of Louis-François Lemonnier. The plates present, by a subtle game of mosaic of olive, brown and red leather, a scene from which emerge climbing plants, a bird in flight, an oriental character seen from behind. In the first third of the plates, watercolored arms under mica plate. Gilded edges. Ornamented edges. Small rubbing of the corners very slightly worn. XXXVI, 224, 200 pp.
An exceptional copy in white mosaic calf, with the watercolored arms of a Bourbon Parma princess, probably Caroline de Bourbon, princess of Parma (1770-1804), great-granddaughter of Louis XV.
We find in this binding, the modus operandi and the themes typical of the workshop of Louis-François Lemonnier. The choice of leathers, the motifs represented and the pink tabis endpapers are similar to three bindings kept at the BnF and, more specifically, to the signed binding bearing the figure of Marie-Josèphe de Saxe.
"From a family dynasty of bookbinders, established in Paris since the beginning of the 17th century, writes Devauchelle, Louis-François Lemonnier was received as a master on October 14, 1737 and appointed Guard of the Brotherhood in 1757. He is known essentially for the realization of mosaic bindings, realized at least for part in association with his son Jean-Charles-Henri."
This volume contains Les Saisons, poem, L'Abenaki (p1 p6) - Sara Th, Ziméo, Pièces fugitives, Pigmalion and 15 other pieces such as Le Triomphe d'Alexandre, letters, songs, etc. as well as 48 Fables Orientales with a Preface by Saadi.
Without mentioning the publisher, this fifth revised edition of 1773 was conceived in Amsterdam. The texts have been enriched with 5 full-page etchings outside the text after drawings by Gravelot and J.B. Le Prince and 4 title vignettes characterizing the seasons, signed by Choffard. Several bands and lamp-ends not pictured.
