ÉRASME - Eloge de la folie - Lot 20
ÉRASME - Eloge de la folie S.l., 1751. In-4, full morocco richly decorated with a beautiful floral plate with butterflies and marottes in corners. Smooth spine decorated with butterflies and marottes. Ornate bands, inner lace, yellow silk endpapers. Boards slightly stained, spines rubbed in places. False title, frontispiece, title in red and black, XXIV, 222 pp, table. Figures by Eisen with frame. Very nice binding for this illustrated first edition of Gueudeville's translation. Reprinted in quarto format on large paper with engraved frontispiece framed. The pages are framed with a double red and blue fillet. The in-12 edition is found much more often than this one. It is especially much less beautiful. The frontispiece, the thirteen hors-texte plates and the numerous bands, lettering and in-text caps are due to Eisen. The butterflies and the marottes of the binding take up the leitmotivs of the artist's engravings. Handwritten mention in pencil: "vente du comte de Sauvage". For a similar copy see the catalog of the library of Viscount Couppel du Lude (23 November 2009, lot 65).
