Prancing horse in bronze with black patina; terrace with bea - Lot 94
Prancing horse in bronze with black patina; terrace with beaded edges. Italy, 17th century, after a wax model by Leonardo da Vinci. H.: 9.5 cm This horse, with its highly deployed energy, is to be compared with a corpus of four horses studied by curators and art historians: the Budapest horse (Budapest Museum of Fine Arts), the New York horse (Metropolitan Museum), the Limmerick horse in Ireland (Hunt Museum) and the London horse or Jeannerat horse sold by Tajan on December 3, 2019 lot 199. It is interesting to observe this particularly strong ardor and to compare this print to the drawings that Leonardo da Vinci prepared to create the fresco of the Battle of Anghiari painted in Florence in 1503 for the Palazzo Vecchio. In order to better represent the melee and define the composition of this great setting, Leonardo had modeled small wax figures. This statuette is obviously derived from one of them, enlarged and cast, probably by one of his collaborators. The model was taken up and used in the following centuries.
