Beautiful Christ in carved ivory. Head raised towards the sk - Lot 83
Beautiful Christ in carved ivory. Head raised towards the sky, hairstyle with long wavy locks falling on the shoulders, half-open mouth revealing the teeth, perizonium held by a band of cloth, legs and feet parallel. Attributed to Pierre Simon Jaillot (Avignon les Saint-Claud 1631 - Paris 1681), third quarter of the 17th century H. 27 cm, base (visible accidents and missing parts) Although fragmentary, this ivory sculpture of a high standard is challenging. Indeed, this Christ, without anatomical exaggeration, possesses some features peculiar to the sculptor Pierre Simon Jaillot, perceptible in the execution of the face with subtle details, notably the double row of wavy hair falling on the shoulders, but also by the hemmed upper eyelids, or even by the perizonium without cord, softly tied on the hips. Few works by this sculptor have come down to us. The reception piece of Jaillot at the Academy of Saint-Luc, which is a Christ, has disappeared. However, a Christ placed in the church of Ailles near the abbey of Vauclair (Aisne) owes its fame to the fact that it was known as a replica of this reception piece; the date of 1664 and Jaillot's signature have been noted under a foot that has now been restored. Photographed in 1913, it disappeared during the First World War. An important calvary in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv a.1-1984) is also dated 1664 (fig 1).
