Saint Barbara in carved limestone, back sketched. Standing, - Lot 75
Saint Barbara in carved limestone, back sketched. Standing, leaning against a tower and holding an open book in her left hand, she has a hairstyle with a median stripe dividing long, smooth, finely waved locks held in place by a scarf-like headdress; she is dressed in a dress with a blousy belt and a cloak, one side of which returns to the front. Lorraine, entourage of Mansuy Gauvain, early 16th century H. 93 cm (missing the palm, broken head glued back) Provenance : Former Bresset collection. The lightness of the hair strands and the softness of the square-shaped face make it possible to compare this sculpture with the work of the ducal image-maker Mansuy Gauvain, in particular the figure of Mary Magdalene in the sepulchre of Neufchâteau. The same softness of the face can be seen in the delicately closed mouth, which does not pinch the lips but opens onto the suggested corners of the mouth; the nose with its fine ridge and small nostrils; and the eyes with their almond-shaped eyelids.
