Large mother-of-pearl shell engraved in high relief and open - Lot 1
Large mother-of-pearl shell engraved in high relief and openwork decorated with the Adoration of the Magi, frieze of flowering foliage, and a clasp. Palestine, end of the 19th century H. 16.5 cm - L. 15.4 cm Collection of engraved mother-of-pearl, Madame X, Normandy. The tradition of engraved pintadine valves in the East goes back to the first centuries of the Christian era. Indeed, in Palestine the craftsmen made crosses and other cult objects, ex-voto, pendants with religious vocation, or objects of memories of the Holy Land. The Muslim world also used this "white mother of pearl" to engrave miniature suras in particular. Finally, the interiors and furniture will be enriched from the end of the fifteenth century of inlays or pearly marquetry in Damascus in Syria. Two sites provide a supply of quality mother-of-pearl, the shores of Lake Houleh in Palestine and a site near Deir ez-Zor in the Euphrates valley. Bibliography: C.
