[ARCHAEOLOGY - EGYPTOLOGY]. L.A.S. "E. Vollard" [?], addressed to Pierre Drouin, in Saumur. Rome, October 16, 1825. 3 pp. in-4. Address with postmarks. Amazing letter containing the account of the study of an Egyptian mummy, in 1825, in Rome. The archaeological excavations are stopped, because of the aria cattiva. "A few months ago I attended the undressing of a former Egyptian lady; it was a mummy that an Englishman of my acquaintance had received from Egypt. Although we had freed it from all its robes and swaddling clothes, which all mummies are wrapped in, we remained undecided for a long time whether it was a man or a woman. A surgeon finally, after a very rigorous examination, declared her a lady or at least a woman. The owner made me a gift of a kind of dress or shirt that we had collected from him among a quantity of other things [...] and I dare to send you a sample [...]. It is between 2500 and 3000 years old (!). I had no news at all of Mr. St. Hilaire; he intended to spend this winter in Italy [...]". He evokes Bathilde, Adèle and Aldegonde, the baths of Ischia and Nocera, Naples, Mr. and Mrs. Saint-Ange, the Carnival of Rome, his collections of antiques "what a beautiful museum has been formed at home since your absence; soon I will have to think about a custodian", Mr. Saint Hilaire (Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire?), etc. A piece of the said cloth is fixed on the letter.
