MOUNTED BALLOON "THE VICTOR HUGO". - Lot 497
MOUNTED BALLOON "THE VICTOR HUGO". Letter with correspondence. Fold with stamp of departure "Paris, rue des Feuillantines", October 17, 1870, on the back stamp of passage "Paris in Caen", October 20, 1870 and stamp of arrival "Condé-sur-Noireau", October 21, 1870. As is. History: during the siege of Paris which lasted from 1870 to 1871 67 balloons were raised in order to communicate outside the city. Among them, the one of September 26, 1870 carried leaflets written by Victor Hugo which were dropped above the enemy lines. The photographer Nadar had asked Hugo if another balloon, the one of October 18, 1870, could be named after him: "I don't ask for anything better than to go up to the sky through you", the poet had answered him. So the 15th balloon of the Siege of Paris, named "Victor Hugo", took off on Tuesday, October 18, 1870 at 11:45 am from the Tuileries garden to the cries of "Long live the Republic" and transported the mail postmarked on October 16 and 17, 1870.
