Nice set of correspondence, most of which is addressed to Alfred Étiévant, secretary of the committee for the organization of Victor Hugo's birthday. Including : L.A.S. from Camille Pelletan, historian, French politician and friend of Victor Hugo (1846-1915), addressed to Juliette Adam, French writer and polemicist (1836-1936), undated (1880), in-4°, 1 page: "(...) I have been honored by the Senate to be among the friends of Victor Hugo, who are to offer him a banquet. Now this banquet is fixed for Wednesday..." [this meal was organized for Victor Hugo's birthday]. L.A.S. from Gustave Oudet, politician (1816-1897), Paris, February 17, 1881, in-4°, 3 pages, on the letterhead of the Senate: "(...) Allow me to address to you in writing the humble observations on which I proposed to draw the attention of the commission to which you belong. These observations are not mine: they were communicated to me by one of my colleagues in the Senate, a very close friend of Mr. V. Hugo, one of those whom you esteem, honor and love the most, Mr. Corbon...". L.A.S. from Alfred Barbou (1846-1907), February 17, 1881, in-4°, 1 page: "(...) At three o'clock this afternoon I was still at Chez Quentin. Ducret's uncle told a friend of mine yesterday that my presence would not be necessary today at your meeting. - On the one hand impossibility and on the other excuse...". L.A.S. from Gustave Rivet, French playwright and politician (1848-1936), undated Friday (1881), in-4°, 1 page: "(...) I am very much afraid that I will not be able to attend today the meeting which has for goal the birthday of V. Hugo...". L.A.S. from José Maria Torres Caicedo, Colombian intellectual and writer (1830-1889), Paris, February 18, 1881, in-4°, 3 pages, on headed paper with his monogram in red letters: "I have just received the letter that you did me the honor to send me to let me know that the Committee of Organization of the Festival of Victor Hugo made me the great honor to name me member of the Committee of honor. (...) Victor Hugo, the Dante of modern society, is not only the inspired singer of all that is beautiful in the soul, of expansive in the heart, but he was and is the Apostle of all ideas of Freedom and Progress...". L.A.S. from Gustave Oudet, politician (1816-1897), Paris, February 20, 1881, in-4°, 1 page, on Senate letterhead : "I had the honor to be Saturday evening at Victor Hugo's house with Mr. Talmeyre, the intransigent and with my colleague m. Corbon. In our conversation, it was question between these two gentlemen of places to be reserved for the senators and the deputies for the session of the Trocadero...". L.A.S. from Émile Richard, chief editor of Le Petit républicain, Paris, February 25, 1881, in-4°, 1 page, on headed paper of the political newspaper Le Petit républicain: "Please, I beg you, give to the bearer the insignia for tomorrow's party, destined to my two collaborators, Messrs Albert Levoy (or Levay) and Gasture as well as to me...". L.A.S. from Charles Stewart-Parnell, French politician (1846-1891), Paris, February 26, 1881, in-4°, 2 pages: "it is with great regret that I find myself unable to attend your musical evening because of the commitments already made for Sunday evening. Please be good enough to tell the members of your committee how much I appreciate their attention". L.A.S. from Emmanuel Gonzales, French novelist and playwright (1815-1887), Paris, February 26, 1881, in-4°, 2 pages, on letterhead of the Société des gens de lettres: "I receive this morning Saturday, February 26, 11 o'clock, your notice of the convocation of our committee for the feast of our immortal president Victor Hugo...". Good condition.
Provenance : former collection of Alfred Étiévant (1845-19 ??), secretary of the different committees dedicated to Victor Hugo. These documents are rare and unpublished. They have never been presented to the public.
