HUGO Victor (1802-1885) - Lot 372
HUGO Victor (1802-1885) Folded letter with recipient's address on reverse, containing an unsigned autograph note from Victor Hugo to Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870), dated November 6, 1833, in-4°, with postmark. Small tears and ink stains, but overall good condition. Text: "From an offended but still friendly friend". Provenance: former collection of Louis Barthou (1862-1934), French minister and statesman, offered by the latter to his closest collaborator and cabinet director, Louis Vitalis. History: On November 6, 1833, Victor Hugo staged his last play "Marie Tudor" at the Porte-Saint-Martin theater. Just before this representation a violent article published in the Journal des Débats had attacked the theater of Alexandre Dumas. The latter, convinced that Hugo had been the sponsor of this article, fell out violently with him. Sainte-Beuve will write on November 17, 1833 to his friend Victor Pavie "an article in the Debates, of a friend of Hugo against Dumas irritated this one against Hugo and here they are jammed forever, and worse with scandal".
