BOUCHER Jean Marie (1870-1939) Portrait of Victor Hugo, study for the monument of Guernsey. Sculpture in bronze with brown patina signed on the lower left side Jean Boucher, kept on a large rectangular base in serpentine. Wear and tear. H. : 52 cm - W. : 27 cm - D. : 22,5 cm. History : On July 8, 1914, Guernsey inaugurated a statue in effigy of Victor Hugo to commemorate the author exiled on its lands. The work adorns the Candie Gardens and offers a meditative representation of the poet. Victor Hugo lived 15 years in exile (1855-1870) with his family on the island of Guernsey. It was here that he wrote some of his most important works: Les Contemplations (1956), La Légende des siècles (1859-1883), Les Misérables (1862), Les Travailleurs de la mer (1866) or even L'Homme qui rit (1869).
