TABLE SERVICE OF GRAND DUKE NICOLAS PAVLOVITCH FUTURE EMPEROR NICOLAS I OF RUSSIA. BIENNAIS, Paris, 1798-1809. Set of 4 silver dinner plates, bordered by a frieze of palmettes and engraved on the top of the rim with the emperor's monogram in Cyrillic characters "N P" : Nicolas Pavlovitch under imperial crown. Slight wear from time, but good general condition. Title mark: 1st cock, Paris, 1798-1809. Goldsmith's mark: Guillaume Martin Biennais. Diameter: 24,5 cm. Total weight: 2 kg 347 g. Provenance: former collection of the grand duke Nicolas Pavlovitch (1796-1855), then by inheritance to his son the emperor Alexander II (1818-1881) and by descent from the latter. Preserved since then until the Revolution of 1917. Sold by the Soviet government in the years History: This service was ordered for the Crown Grand Duke of Russia on the occasion of his marriage in 1817 with Princess Alexandra of Prussia, daughter of Emperor Frederick William II. The inventory of this service kept in the Imperial Palace Furniture Storage indicates in 1907 that it was located in the Anitchkov Palace, the official residence of the Crown Grand Dukes of Russia.
