Hippolyte de Vergèses (1847-1896) Presumed portrait of Charles Arnaud, architect, 1878 Oil on panel 22 x 15 cm Dedicated, signed and dated, lower left: to the friend Arnaud, Hte de Vergeses 1878 We propose to see in this elegant model, entirely offered to his reading, Charles Arnaud (1847-1930), architect, from Auvergne like the painter, and born the same year as him. When Vergèses was studying in Paris with Carolus-Duran, on Boulevard du Montparnasse, Arnaud was a student at the Beaux-Arts on Rue Bonaparte. Back in Auvergne, Arnaud worked in Royat les Bains, Ayat-sur-Sioule, Clermont-Ferrand, where he was responsible for the Crédit Lyonnais building, place de Jaude. As for Vergèses, he made his debut at the Salon in 1879, where he sent, until 1895, about twenty works. He devoted himself to portraits and delicate and light genre scenes, often using the attire of young women. Another member of his family, Pierre-Hector, was also a painter.
