Notes:
This model was made in the 19th century after a pair of celadon porcelain vases of the Kang Hi period (1662-1722) transformed into ewers by their mounting, from the collection of Louis d'Aumont de Rochebaron (1709-1782), kept in the Louvre Museum. They appear as follows in the inventory after the death of the duke: "689. Item two celadon vases of light tone with drawings of pagodas & shrubs mounted in buyre & lined with throat, with dragon handles & gilt bronze feet, on serpentine base". The dragon motif, common in the first half of the 18th century, seems to be rushing to drink. The decoration under the handle shows leaves and mantling decorated with shells, and under the shell-shaped beak marine motifs formed by a hermit crab, a winkle and corals. This mount was very successful in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A similar pair in grey celadon is known, in the former collection of Roberto Polo. Our model is to be compared with a pair made by Edward Holmes BALDOCK (1777- 1845), an English bronzemaker of the 19th century, and kept in a private American collection. Work of the middle of the XIXth century, in porcelain of Paris, carrying false marks of Sevres.
