Souvenir of the naval battle of Iquique - Lot 349
Souvenir of the naval battle of Iquique Jade block carved with a bas-relief of a Roman soldier, forming an inkwell. On a gray marble plate decorated with a metal plate from the Chillian corvette the Esmeralda, decorated with an engraved bronze plate; Esmeralda 21 de Mayo de 1879. The naval battle of Iquique is a confrontation that took place on May 21, 1879, during the War of the Pacific, a conflict between Chile and the alliance between Peru and Bolivia. The battle took place in front of the Peruvian port of Iquique, with the Huáscar, a Peruvian battleship commanded by Miguel Grau, finally sinking the Esmeralda, a Chilean wooden corvette under the command of Arturo Prat (1848 - 1879), after four hours of fighting. The body of Captain Arturo Prat was transferred to Valparaíso in 1888 and buried in a mausoleum according to the will of the population. With this monument, a tribute is paid to the Chilean heroes of the battle and every year, in the presence of the President of Chile, the memory of Arturo Prat is saluted with a military parade. Following the decision of the National Congress of Valparaíso, the Constitution of 1980 requires the president to give an annual speech in honor of Arturo Prat in the same city. This has become a tradition that has continued ever since.
