Aimée Duvivier (1766-1852), d'après Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) The red boy or Master Lambton, 1827 Pastel on paper 35 x 27.5 cm. Annotation, in pencil, on the back: Félix de (?) / painted in pastel by / Melle Du Vivier in 1830/(?) after the portrait of / the little Lambton Exhibited in Paris in 1827, the portrait of the young son of the future Earl of Durham caused a sensation and was quickly considered a masterpiece of British Romantic portraiture. It was acquired, as recently as July 2021, by the National Gallery in London, for the sum of 9.3 million pounds. Aimée Duvivier was the daughter of Pierre-Charles Duvivier (1716-1780), director of the Manufacture de la Savonnerie, and a student of Greuze. As a portrait painter, she exhibited at the Youth Exhibitions in 1786, 1787 and 1791, and at the Salon in 1806, 1822, 1824 and until 1843.
