The Adoration of the Golden Calf : Wooden panel in martin varnish in imitation of lacquer representing the adoration of the Golden Calf, this one placed on a pedestal decorated with Chinese characters. The idol is surrounded by a farandole of dancers. On the left, a musician and a richly dressed woman, in the taste of the Turk, observe the scene. A set of presents are arranged in the foreground such as blue and white porcelain vases serving as offerings. In the taste of the Far East. Middle of the 18th century. Wood and gilded stucco frame. D. at sight : 34.5 x 52 cm. This panel typically reflects the taste for chinoiseries and turqueries developed during the 18th century. The Martin brothers invented this varnish in order to compete with the beautiful lacquers imported from China and Japan, combining technique and exoticism, highly appreciated during the Enlightenment.
