Cartel and its console in chased and gilded bronze, the movi - Lot 198
Cartel and its console in chased and gilded bronze, the moving case topped by a love holding a scythe, the dial surmounted by an openwork radiating foliage, underlined by rocaille and a mascaron on a trellis background, the feet with palm scrolls.
The base is decorated with rocaille, clasps and palmettes from which emerges a rooster in fury.
Enamelled dial signed like the movement " Gudin à Paris ".
Louis XV period, circa 1745-1750.
Stamped Saint Germain and JME on the back of the case.
Marked with a crowned C of several sizes repeated on the bronzes.
H. : 123cm (130cm with the angel's scythe).
Small accidents, modified suspension.
Provenance :
- Great Parisian aristocratic collection.
According to the nomenclature established by Alexandre Pradère, our cartel derives from the model created by Charles Cressent around 1735 and whose production will continue after 1750 in the workshop of Saint Germain father and son. Alexandre Pradère lists seven examples of this model, so this one would be the eighth, unknown until then.
The presence of numerous punches with the crowned C dates the bronzes of our cartel between February 1745 and February 1749, but the stamp of Saint Germain would situate its creation from 1750, just like the accession to the mastery of Gudin (1750). Should we see it as a work by Charles Cressent taken over by Saint Germain who would have used the bronzes of the former on one of his cases? Or more probably a collaboration of Saint Germain father and son, the first for the bronzes, the second for the case and the brass sheet sides.
It seems difficult and daring to assert an attribution, because as Alexandre Pradère reminds us, the paternity of this model called "à masque de femme, second modèle rocaille avec socle au coq" remains controversial.
