The Coronation of Saint Catherine, painting with glued threa - Lot 170
The Coronation of Saint Catherine, painting with glued threads, southern Italy, first quarter of the 18th century, polychrome silk threads and metallic threads glued with wax on cardboard, the skin tones are painted in tempera on silk satin. Probably inspired by Carlo Maratta's painting kept in the Louvre Museum, (inv. 375), the scene presents Saint Catherine kneeling crowned by the infant Jesus; in the foreground the cogwheel of her martyrdom, in the background Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Paul and two cherubs supporting a canopy formed by a drapery, 51 x 41 cm. The blue of the cloaks and the rather dark colors of the background are to be compared with the compositions with glued threads of Claudio Girard, the Museum of Ancient Art in Turin keeps an Annunciation of this artist whose equivalent dimensions are unusual for compositions with glued threads.
