A moving seaport - Lot 219
A moving seaport This is a toy with a three-dimensional effect, called Bewegender Seehafen in German, which can be translated as moving seaport. These are harbor scenes animated by boats. They were made by Nuremberg toy dealers, including George Hieronimus Bestelmeier and Schropp, at the end of the 18th century. The object takes the form of a small rectangular box in which all the elements of the decoration are placed. Cut out of cardboard and colored, it consists of several planes of exotic vegetation and small boats. To assemble it, you must first remove these elements, then turn the box over. The grooves in the bottom of the box are designed to accommodate the boats on which the characters have been placed. Once these elements are installed, by gently shaking the box, the boats sway and thus offer the illusion of sailing on the waves. They keep this movement for several minutes thanks to their lead-weighted keel. Dimensions closed box, 24.5 x 13.5 x 6.5 cm. On the front of the box is the date of 1796. At the bottom is glued a cardboard bearing the inscription: Directoire toy lent by Mrs. Viscountess of St Poldias Appears in the Bestelmeier catalog in 1803. See: Thomas Stauss, Frühe Spielwelten, Librum, Hochwald, (Schweiz) pp. 328-329.
