Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570) d'après - Lot 147
Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570) d'après Pallas. The goddess is shown helmeted and in armor, holding a Medusa-headed shield in her left hand and a spear in her right. Bronze with a black brown patina. 19th century. H. : 110 cm Notes: A set of four sculptures of the same model formerly in the Rothschild collections (Christie's, London, 21 March 2002 (`£212 750). This sculpture, of a set of four, is a copy of the bronze statue adorning the Loggetta in St. Mark's Square in Venice. These bronze statues can be considered an extraordinary example of Sansovino's work in Venice. Each bay of the façade had a semicircular arch, the central one serving as an entrance and the sides as windows; the four bronze figures of Pallas, Apollo, Mercury and Peace stand in niches between the columns. The four sculptures are among the finest creations of sixteenth-century Italian sculpture, certainly the most striking expression of Sansovino's Venetian career
