Scipio the African, circa 1770 - Lot 125
Scipio the African, circa 1770 Folded fan, the cream silk sheet painted with two bouquets of flowers in cartels underlined with golden sequins. In the center, a throned Emperor receives a couple in his palace. The scene probably evokes the continence of Scipio, refusing the bride offered to him as "booty" of the victor. Three bouquets of flowers on the reverse. Carved, engraved and gilded bone mount of a young woman surrounded by a child and a dog. A child dancing on the plumes. H.t. 27.5 cm-H.f. 12.8 cm (wear)
