Imperial Manufactory, St. Petersburg, 1892.
Hard porcelain plate, with scalloped edge, decorated on the rim with a frieze of stylized golden garlands on a lavender background. In the center is the monogram A (Alexander) in gold letter under imperial crown. Time wear to the gilding but good condition. Green marks on the reverse: A. III. (Alexander II), under imperial crown, dated (18)92.
Diameter : 25 cm.
History : The "Banquet" service was made for the wedding of the Hereditary Grand Duke Alexander Nicolaievitch (future Alexander II), son of Tsar Nicholas I, with the daughter of the Grand Duke Louis II of Hesse-Darmstadt, future Empress Maria Alexandrovna. This service remained in use by the imperial family until the end of the 19th century. The St. Petersburg factory produced supplements throughout this period, including our two plates.
Reference: The Hermitage collection contains a large number of items from this so-called "banqueting" service. A part of this service was presented during the exhibition "Dinner with the Tsars" in the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam. See in the exhibition catalogue "Dining with the Tsars: Fragile Beauty from the Hermitage", Amsterdam, 2014, pp. 110-119, the service in question
