History: the grand duchess Alexandra Nicolaïévna (1825-1844), third daughter of the tsar Nicolas I, was distinguished by her beauty and her musical talent. At the age of 18, on 18 January 1844, she married Prince Frederick William of Hesse-Cassel (1820-1884). Due to the sudden marriage, the Grand Duchess' dowry was prepared at short notice.
